Toothless is Hiccup's Night Fury in the film, and his Common or Garden Dragon in the books.
Appearance in the Film[]
In the film, he is very loyal, and will always come to Hiccup's aid. He has an injured tail, part of which is artificial, as some of it was torn off when Hiccup first caught him in a bolas cannon.
His race, Night Fury, are the rarest and most intelligent of all dragons. They aren't the biggest, but have the largest wing-to-body-ratio of any dragon, which makes them excellent flyers. They attack by dive-bombing buildings or Vikings, and pulling up at the last minute.

Toothless in the books
In the books, he is the smallest of the hunting dragons, and a Common or Garden Dragon. He is also toothless, hence his name. In the books he is very disobedient, and always moaning. Hiccup only managed to train him using jokes and riddling talk - his final resort.
